Yesterday I setup a new managed switch. I needed it it for the VLAN settings, I was going to use a DDWRT one (recall couple posts back) but I ended up buying one because it was on sale. It is the Netgear GS108E v3.
Even without the mail in rebate this switch was worth it for me
But I would prefer the GS108T which has more features, but it was $61.99, so this was a good buy.
I don’t like the older GS108E because it required the use of a software client to configure, but this version can be managed via web browser. Unfortunately no SSL.
As for why I went this route vs the DDWRT VLAN, three reasons
- Price point of a GB DDWRT vs this box was not bad, and this was new
- Much easier to configure, more reliable
- This has 8 ports vs the 5 on DDWRT which I will use.
Speaking of DDWRT, I figured out what I needed for my virtual instance. Basically it needed promiscious ports for some reason.
I did run this morning on the treadmill. Was going to run again in the evening but went out with the family. Wife went to 85degrees for the first time.
