I consider myself pretty advanced in technology, but I think that my knowledge of how bad things are, kind of holds me back in embracing new tech due to security.
I been thinking of couple things.
- The reason I did not go to AWS sooner is that I am not comfortable with someone else controlling my servers. Also I keep thinking to myself, these instances I spin off are based on templates build by others, do I trust those template.
- The other thing is banking by phone, back in the late 90s I did support for PC home backing, back then I was more comfortable banking with an old school modem, than going through the Internet. The Internet has evolved and is larger, but weird its not that I trust the Internet more, its that I trust a POTS line much less. Now I think about what malware is running on my phone. A lot of apps and stuff ask for permissions that they don’t need.
- Finally making my home smart. I have cameras and sensors around the house, I know that stuff talks over the Internet in an unsecured manner, my solution, don’t let them talk on the Internet. So now it is no longer an Internet of Thing, rather something on my home network. But I am able to get to it via VPN.
One thing that I should always remember, things are always evolving, and the real solution is to remain vigilant.
