Power of the Group

Usually at this time of year I am doing a lot of things.

This year is no different,  I have done a lot this year, gone to Great Wolf Lodge, Seafair Torchlight and other things.

Unfortunately, the things I am doing is weekend is not exercise.  Its OK though, because there our Deck project has taught each of us in my family our own little lesson.

Our front deck has come a long way, what started off as a simple repaint job, has turned into a nearly full rebuilt project.   My wife has figured out how to use a miter saw, my oldest son is learning manual labor, my twins are learning how to help, and my youngest even knows how to stay out of the way.

For me, it was a realization that the group, when all producing, can really produce a better quality product with less work.  I wish I knew this lesson in the beginning.  Last time I tried doing the deck it turned out to be crap.

Both my wife and I learned what really needed to be done (for example, use a stain, not primer and paint), my wife really convinced me to replace rotted wood and not simply sand and paint over it.  My kids provided real productivity (as opposed to labor simply used to occupy them) that helped.

This was a good lesson for me.  I need to stop going solo on some of my projects, including coding.

I am worn down, just doing pushups and situps today.  Did a lot of manual labor.  I will get back on track on weekends after summer.  I am working out decently during the week though.
